The James C. Hormel Gay & Lesbian Center of the San Francisco Public Library would like to extend the opportunity to local and national artists to take place in our upcoming exhibition, Reversing Vandalism.

The idea behind the Reversing Vandalism exhibition is to transform destructive energy, directed toward over 600 books, primarily on gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and women's studies, into a collection of artwork that illuminates the value and evolution of these books, art, and ideas.

At the beginning of 2001, San Francisco Main Library staff began finding books, carved with a sharp instrument, hidden under shelving units. Many of these volumes, eventually numbering over 600, were related to issues of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals, as well as AIDS and women's health issues. Eventually, the vandal was caught and charged with a hate crime. When the damaged books were assessed, it was determined most were beyond repair, and were withdrawn from the Library's collection. In an effort to redirect the "energy" of the destroyed Library books, the Library is making them available to artists. The resulting artwork will be exhibited at the Hormel Center and other possible venues.

We would like to offer individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines one or more of the destroyed books to create works of art for the Reversing Vandalism exhibition. We have no preconceived notions of what the resulting artwork might look like, only that it would likely help transform these destroyed Library materials. Should your organization be willing to make the Call for Artist Participation applications available to members, clients, and constituents, we would be happy to provide you with them.

Attached to this message is the application form. If you have any problem opening this form, (you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader) please let me know and I will send you paper copies. These forms are also available on line here:

RAM 4 | Survival Kit

www.olento.fi/ram4

3-8 November 2003
Suomenlinna island, Helsinki

A survival kit must contain the essential tools
appropriate to your own environment: an arctic kit
is unlikely to help you in the jungle.

RAM4: Survival Kit is part of the "Re-Approaching
New Media" series of workshops and events being
held across 6 Nordic and Baltic countries. Olento
invites applications from artists, media practitioners
and researchers who would like to propose the
contents of a communications technology "survival kit".
We ask the question: what do we need to survive in
today's media and technology environment?

At the workshop we will learn and discuss about
each others environment, skills, communities and
strategies, and share our knowledge and insights.
Our goal is to enable participants to create,
develop and reflect new concepts, partnerships
and projects that address the needs of their
communities.

Participants are invited to Helsinki for 1 week
(3-8 November), or for a shorter period (5-8 November).
Accommodation for living and working will be on
the historic fortress island, Suomenlinna, 15 minutes
ferry ride from Helsinki. The weeks activities
will be a mixture of timetabled, structured workshops
on particular themes, discussions toward developing
"survival kits", and workshops involving local
practitioners and communities in Helsinki.

To apply, send an e-mail to address ram4@olento.fi.

Please enclose:

- full contact information (name, e-mail, phonenumber,
address + nationality)
- CV
- Short (up to 500 words) statement of your interest
in the theme and what you might like to bring and take
back from the workshop

Applications must be received by 15 September 2003!

The Studio for Creative Inquiry

Artist Residency Program

Application Guidelines

"Inquiry into Collectives and the Artist's Role in Society"

The STUDIO for Creative Inquiry at the College of Fine Arts at Carnegie
Mellon University seeks applicants from across the spectrum of all the
arts for two residencies January - December 2004.

The STUDIO is an arts research center designed to support creation and
exploration in the arts, especially interdisciplinary projects that bring
together the arts, science, technology and the humanities, and impact
local and global communities. At the intersection of art, science and
society, STUDIO artists find new creative opportunities, funding and the means to transform society. In order to accomplish this, STUDIO artists become:

Scientific entrepreneurs, becoming the driving force in endeavors
traditionally directed by members of fields affiliated with the
traditional sciences.

Socio-technological interpreters, acting as a bridge that expands
over the growing gap between the scientific community and society
at large.

Community educators, bringing social groups closer to scientific,
educational, environmental, economic and political issues, making
them aware of their role in global problems and solutions.

Creative catalysts, developing and implementing innovative projects
that merge the poetic with the pragmatic and visionary versatility.

Since its inception in 1989, the STUDIO and its artists have received
national and international acclaim for the production of highly
experimental work. A unique portfolio of artworks and educational tools has
been developed. Visit our web site to see examples of these projects
involving STUDIO fellows: http://www.cmu.edu/studio/.

The STUDIO contends that extended periods of time are need for artists to
address the complex issues that our times present and that this process
fits appropriately into the research model. The two residencies will be
for one year, January through December 2004.

This fellowship program seeks to connect established artists to the robust
science-technology resources at Carnegie Mellon. The artists will:

1) engage contemporary science-technology as it provides tools, media
and content to their work

2) assume leadership roles in generating and implementing complex,
collaborative projects

3) connect the process of the projects and its results to the larger
community

Artists will initiate projects and develop collaborative teams drawing on
faculty-researchers across the university's major academic divisions in
the arts, sciences, technology and social sciences.

During the residency program, the STUDIO will conduct an inquiry into the
current trend of artists working as collectives, including the sponsorship
of a panel discussion open to national participation culminating in a
report.

The purpose of the STUDIO is not only to advance the arts, but also to
cross-pollinate the disparate fields of endeavor at the university, to
leave a lasting imprint on the university's capabilities to support work
involving the arts and other disciplines, and to provide experiences which
can be subsequently returned to a diverse set of communities.

Residency Benefits
------------------
Fellows will receive administrative support from the STUDIO staff,
including assistance in developing connections with potential collaborators
and facilities at the university. Office space in the STUDIO and computing
equipment will be provided to each fellow.

computer labs and athletic facilities.

Each resident artist will also receive:

* 12 month salary of $30,000 and special faculty status

NEXT 5 MINUTES 4

Next 5 Minutes is a festival that brings together art, campaigns,
experiments in media, technology, and transcultural politics. The fourth
edition of the festival is the result of a collaborative effort of a
variety of organisations, initiatives and individuals dispersed world-wide.

The program of Next 5 Minutes 4 is structured along four core thematic
threads, bringing together a host of projects and debates. These four
thematic threads are:

* DEEP LOCAL, which explores the ambiguities of connecting essentially
translocal media cultures with local contexts.

* THE DISAPPEARING OF THE PUBLLIC deals with the elusiveness of the public
that tactical media necessarily needs to interface with, and considers new
strategies for engaging with or redefining 'the public'.

* THE TACTICS OF APPROPRIATION questions who is appropriating whom?
Corporate, state, or terrorist actors all seem to have become effective
media tacticians, is the battle for the screen therefore lost?

* THE TACTICAL AND THE TECHNICAL finally questions the deeply political
nature of (media-) technology, and the role that the development of new
media tools plays in defining, enabling and constraining its tactical use.
