Call for Contributions, Performance Research, proposal deadline Oct. 31
'Generation' Performance Research 9: (September 2004)
Issue Editors: Claire MacDonald & Laura McGough
'Generation' will be the third of four issues exploring themes of transaction, transmission and exchange: 'Correspondence', 'On the Page', 'Generation' and 'On Shame'.
'Generation' proceeds from a simple question - how does belonging to a generation inform the generation of art? This is a question we want to pose to artists, writers, curators, critics and witnesses to the art events that have influenced and informed art making and art writing within living memory.
The idea behind the issue is to explore the transaction that 'generation' implies - between the interests and preoccupations of one's own time and the aesthetic and cultural performances that emerge from it. The sense of belonging to a generation is stronger for some people than for others. It influences some more than others. One's sense of artistic generation may feel very different from that of one's peers. One may feel part of one's time, out of time, profoundly influenced by key events, or indifferent to them. We hope the issue will explore all these things.
The issue is a collaboration between Performance Research and Nomads, the Washington DC online organization that has shown and commissioned new media, produced the journal Massage and is now moving into curating sound. For this issue we are particularly interested in exploring approaches to documentary work, interviews, oral history and archival research. We are also interested in collaborations between artists and writers, and in links to archival and documentary projects in the arts.
Deadlines are as follows:
Proposals: October 31st 2003
Draft manuscripts: December 17th 2003
Finalised material: February 15th 2004

DIGITALES
Tell the stories * of women and technologies
CALL FOR PAPERS/TALES
http://www.digitales-online.org/tales
Rather than falling into techno-phobia or becoming techno-fans, "Digitales" has always approached digital techniques with a critical and creative eye. They exist, they are here, so we might as well use them, understand them and make use of them in a way that will serve our objectives.
We cannot ignore the history of information technologies, their mythology, symbols, heroines, male or female. The history and mythology being transmitted still influences the way they are written and taught. One often hears that girls are not interested in technical things because they are too cold and too systematic, but what about telling them that one of the pioneers of computing wanted to create a machine that would enable him to contact his lost loved one and that he died like Snow White after eating a poisoned apple : isn't that a beautiful fairy tale?
Understanding the languages and structures in this new grammar, and maybe even imagining others. How these standards and structures have been able to exclude or involve certain types of people, because of certain types of reflexes and expectations, but by discovering that, also discover the possibility of re-writing and inventing processes.
We would like to receive stories and herstories about what we call the "founding myths": Ada Lovelace, Alan Turing, Grace Hopper, etc.
And also tales of/about women and techniques
* Send a ' fragment ' or a whole story in words and/or images on one A4 format page; RTF or JPG files, 300k maximum, to be uploaded ONLY on the website above.
Digitales are full days of meetings/participation on work, knowledge, skills, experiences, dreams and questioning; this time of technological and feminist activity and continual exchange could give birth to a virtual network.
Objectives
Finding a common language to provoke thoughts and to work out a practice which will stimulate women's action in contemporary society and bring awareness of the concept of gender to the debates on new technologies through:
- technological and creative initiation
- understanding of the work tool
- the critical analysis of new technologies
- the discovery and the construction of new images and interactions
- constructing history, means of transmitting experience
Bringing together those who:
- have or want to use technologies to earn their living and to provide for the needs of a family
- have professional and technical skills on the cutting edge of information and communication technology and alternative systems
- undertake university research in various disciplines and in various countries,
- create their artistic work by using 'traditional' or 'new' media (film, video, Internet, digital support)
- are interested by feminist thought on contemporary society.
Partners
Four organising associations, three in Brussels and one in Antwerp
- Interface3 asbl: a centre and a team for vocational training and integration of women in new technologies;
- Sophia: a coordination network for feminist/gender studies
- Constant vzw: an organisation linking artistic and theoretical thinking on the Internet and digital communication
-The Policy Research Centre on Equal Opportunities: a consortium of the University of Antwerp (UA) and the University Centre of Limburg (LUC). The Centre occupies an intermediary position between a research institute, public administration and civil society.
Guests
